Looking after your Medical Tattoo
Read on for Rae Denman’s guide to looking after your medical tattoo, from avoiding products to simple hydration
Medical Tattooing can be costly and time-consuming so looking after the results will be really beneficial. Coming up to the winter months, and potentially not going out as often as during the spring and summer, take a few moments a day to moisturise the tattooed area especially if it’s on scarring.
Pigment fade
1. Retinol and glycolic acid-based products will increase the turnover time of your skin, helping to freshen up the skin (if applied correctly and safely).
Because of this if applied near an area with medical tattooing, the tattooed skin will also turnover quicker than usual causing the pigment to fade.
Keep your retinol products off the tattooed area with an extra 1” around the outside edge as products tend to travel across and under the surface of the skin.
These types of products may also make an impact to the colour of the pigment so for the best results keep these products away from medical tattooing.
2. Vitamin A is often added to multivitamins or other supplements. Vitamin A is used to make retinol, so it has the same properties regarding skin turnover. As long as you’re not deficient in Vitamin A, it is worth taking supplements that DO NOT contain it. This will help your pigment last longer and you will require less colour boosts.
Sun Protection
3. UV rays will also fade the pigment so keeping it out of the sun, or wearing a Factor 50 Sun Protection (SPF 50) will help retain the pigment colour for as long as possible. During the winter we don’t see too much sun in the UK but the UV rays will still come through the clouds and affect the tattooing. For patients that live abroad in a sunny environment, your tattooing will generally fade a little quicker.
The sun won’t cause the tattooed area any harm, as long as it is fully healed, it will just cause it to fade slightly quicker.
4. Keeping your skin moisturised will help the area look healthier and smoother, as well as helping the health of your skin long-term. Spending just a couple of minutes daily on moisturising the area of tattooing will make a difference over the years to how the colour boosts are received by the skin.
