Medical Tattooing Contraindications
It’s always a good idea to know when and WHEN NOT to have tattooing. If you are aware of the contraindications it will save you time knowing that:
- YOU CANNOT HAVE MEDICAL TATTOOING
- YOU NEED TO WAIT A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF TIME BEFORE YOU CAN HAVE MEDICAL TATTOOING
- YOU NEED MEDICAL CONSENT FROM YOUR GP OR CONSULTANT BEFORE YOU CAN PROCEED WITH MEDICAL TATTOOING
Here is my guide to Medical Tattooing contraindications
1. If you are using Roaccutane or other isotretinoin medication your skin may become fragile, slightly red, and more sensitive to sunlight. Do not have any cosmetic treatments, including hair removal (waxing), dermabrasion, laser treatments, or MEDICAL TATTOOING while you’re taking isotretinoin, and for SIX MONTHS after you stop taking it.
2. If you are Pregnant or Breastfeeding, no medical tattooist is insured to treat you. If you are trying for a baby, good luck – but make sure you let your practitioner know this and only book a treatment when you are fully confident you are not pregnant.
3. Under 18 years old. This comes down to insurance – No medical tattooist is insured to treat anyone under the age of 18 without medical consent. This can be from your GP, consultant, dermatologist – whoever is your medical counsel at the time. To make the process easier, obtain your medical consent IN WRITING before you make an appointment with your practitioner.
Please make sure the letter of consent is:
- Dated
- On headed paper
- AND Includes:
- Your name
- Your date of birth
- The area of concern
- That they are giving consent for you to have medical tattooing on the particular area of concern
4. Are you six weeks pre or post-radiotherapy or chemotherapy. If Yes, you are unable to book a medical tattoo treatment unless you have written medical consent. Contact your oncologist team first before contacting your medical tattoo practitioner – it can sometimes take time due to consultants being extremely busy.
5. Under the influence of alcohol or recreational drugs
This is self-explanatory. Just a BIG NO. One beer, one glass of wine, the answer is still NO. Everything we do in clinic is for your safety and for the best long-term result FOR YOU. So if you turn up under the influence of any alcohol or recreational drug you wont be able to receive your treatment.
6. Visible evidence of a coldsore or fever blister or a skin disorder on the area to be treated. You are at high risk of the coldsore virus spreading over the area. Once you have spread the virus, it will remain in that area for your lifetime and continually cause trouble. Make sure you leave plenty of time from the end of the cold sore to your next appointment. Between 6-12 weeks after the coldsore has disappeared/finished healing is a safe window.
7. If you are taking Warfarin or other blood-thinning medication you will require medical consent from either your GP or your consultant to begin or continue any type of medical tattoo treatment.
8. If you are haemophiliac or have Hepatitis C this is a direct contraindication and you cannot have Medical tattooing.
9. If you are epileptic and have experienced a seizure in the last two years this is also a contraindication. Please be aware if your seizures are under control and you have not experienced one in over two years, you can have a medical tattoo treatment but please make sure you have another adult with you.
