Reduce the visibility of a Skin Graft with Medical Tattooing
Just two treatments of medical tattooing to reduce the visibility of a skin graft.
A skin graft is a surgical procedure that is often used to repair skin after the removal of cancerous tissues. A healthy piece of skin is taken from a donor site (often the inner thigh or bottom) and placed in the area where the cancer tissue had been.
It serves to close the wound area when the skin cannot be pulled together with stitching because it is too large a wound.
A graft will heal and become part of the area of the body but may continue to pull or feel tension around it, as well as be different in texture and colour from the immediate surrounding skin.
As you can see from this Before and After, the surgeon has done a wonderful job of placement (in the crease of the neck) and shape of the graft, to fit in as much as possible to the shape of the neck and with medical tattooing, adding some skin tone to the graft makes it much less noticeable.
This patient had a consultation to make sure she had all the relevant data to make an informed choice. It also gave the practitioner the chance to check their medical history making sure there are no contraindications to the treatment, as well as assessing needs, expectations, aftercare and long term care.
Two treatments of medical tattooing were performed over a period of seven weeks. She reported an 80% reduction in the visibility of the skin graft.
As colour boosts are required over a period of a few years, the colour and coverage can be fine tuned to try and increase that reduction rate to as high as possible. The texture is not going to change so there will always be a slight difference in visibility, but the discolouration can be monitored and updated to give the best possible result.
1 is ‘Before any Medical Tattoo treatment’. 10 is ‘Where you would like the area to be’.
- Did the area heal well or did you experience any problems?
Yes it healed well, and a bit quicker than the first treatment - Rate the overall appearance of the area from 1 – 10? 8
- Rate the colour match of the area from 1-10? 8
- In your view what has improved?
Overall colour of scar – from a distance it is much less noticeable - What has not improved?
Texture, but I didn’t expect it to - Any problem areas?
No specific areas, I do wonder whether the colour match might be able to be improved on even more at top up stage but I’m happy with it as is - Do you think you require another session?
No, not until it starts to fade
Thank you so much, I consider it a success and will maintain the camouflage going forward.
