Medical tattooing – I no longer have to explain the scarring

A personal testimonial from a patient following medical tattooing. She shares how she no longer has to explain the scarring

I was delighted to receive this personal testimonial from a patient following medical tattooing. She presented with scars on her legs which she had kept hidden from family and friends, which in turn impacted her life. Following medical tattooing treatment, she has shared the words below:

A Patient Story

“Thin white lines on the thighs can be debilitating when it comes to the summer months. I always tend to wear long shorts or trousers, and I choose not to go to the beach with friends and family for fear of having to join them in the sea.

These lines on my legs are from years ago when I was younger and in a troubled place. I choose not to share that part of my journey with everyone but it is there for everyone to see on my legs. I have moved on, grown up, and in a different part of my story now and I don’t want to have to explain my scars, or even talk about them unless I choose to.

Thankfully during an online search, I came across medical tattooing. I did some research and spoke to a couple of different practitioners to see if they could help.

It was explained to me that the scars would not be gone but could definitely be visibly reduced with medical tattooing. The treatment plan, aftercare, risks, costs and long-term care were all explained thoroughly to me and although I am only partway through the treatment plan, the change in the visibility of my scars is dramatic.

I never thought I would say this but I went swimming yesterday on my own. I put on a swimming costume (which I haven’t done in years) and went for a long swim. I couldn’t believe the change in me. I just knew the scars were not as visible and therefore people probably wouldn’t notice them, and I could just breathe and get on with my swim.
Sometimes you don’t realise the tension you are living with until it has gone. I am looking forward to finishing the treatment and seeing what my final results will be.”

Medical Tattooing for scars works by implanting specific skin/hair tones into the skin to replicate the surrounding area. It can also be used to camouflage skin grafts, hypopigmentation, port wine birthmarks, brow/lash loss and other visible differences.

Generally 2-4 treatments are required (more treatments are required for larger areas or specific cases) and each session will be 4-8 weeks apart. The healing process is relatively simple; no getting the area wet for 48 hours (2 days), and a balm is applied every morning and evening for 5 days. For infection safety we advise no swimming, sauna, sunbed or jacuzzi for 10 days post-treatment.
