Are you scheduled for surgery and concerned about post surgery scarring?

Have you had surgery and been left with scars that are visible?

When entering into surgery there are many factors that need to be considered. Your consultant will be there to advise you through this process. With all surgical procedures there will be scarring, and, thankfully with new techniques and the skill of many surgeons, scarring can be hidden or heals barely visible. However, occasionally scars can turn white, they can stretch or can change in texture and become indented, raised or shiny making them noticeable to yourself and others.

SKIN GRAFTS

When surgery is completed, it may help you to understand the options that can be achieved if your scars become visible.

Medical tattooing is the process of implanting medical grade pigment in the dermal layer of skin to camouflage and colour that area of skin, making it look as close to your own skin as possible.

Medical Tattooing can treat any part of the body, and any skin tone. There will be different recommendations depending on skin tone, age and texture of skin, and the type of scarring and how it has healed. But generally, if your scar is lighter than the surrounding skin, it can be treated.

Scarring needs to be fully healed which can range from 3-6 months for some minor surgical procedures, to 6-12 months for others. If you have had any problems with the healing process you may be required to wait longer until the skin and scar are ready to be treated again. Consultations for Medical Tattooing can be held before or after surgery depending on when information is required, a follow-up review will always be held post surgery to advise a treatment plan and costs.

Treatment

Each treatment will be 4-8 weeks apart for the best outcome, and approximately 2-4 treatments are required. For larger areas of scarring the number of treatments may be more.

Medical Tattooing will not get rid of the actual scar, however, pigment will be added that is as close to your skin tone as possible, which will make the scar look visibly reduced, sometimes invisible.

Medical Tattooing is gently invasive, just going to the dermal layer of skin, there is no risk of any added scarring as the needle doesn’t go deep enough into the layers of skin for this to happen. The pigment will hold its colour in the skin, but will be faded by UV rays, and the body’s lymph system over time. This is a natural process of your lymph system and therefore will have varying effects on different parts of the body and people at various stages of their life. Colour Boosts are required every year to keep the area looking realistic and camouflaged.

Medical Tattooing can take the worry out of; wearing your hair back, swimming, taking your make-up off, wearing certain clothing. These are general day-to-day activities that can be continued without the worry of scarring.
